Cut Glass, Not Arteries!

Kut Gard® ATA® PreventWear™ Safety Garments Protect Major Arties When Handling Glass

A sharp broken piece of glassThe way that glass is manufactured, treated, finished, and handled is a multi-step process that is not without risk for injury at every step of the glass making process.  Despite the growing presence of automation, workers still require protection while operating machinery and handling glass.

One lapse in focus can lead to a serious personal injury or even death. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, for glass and glass product manufacturing workers in 2021, there were 3.5 total recordable cases of nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses per one hundred workers, and 3.2 total cases for flat glass manufacturing workers in the same year.

Whether in the field or at the factory, workers in the glass industry are at risk to hazards common in many construction and manufacturing environments such as slips, trips and falls, or injuries from moving objects. But workers in the glass industry have additional safety concerns, including the safe handling of large, awkward, heavy sheets of glass; cuts and lacerations from sharp edges of glass or the tools used; exposure to dust and flying particles from cutting, grinding, drilling and polishing glass.

SELECTING THE PROPER P.P.E.

Glass handling safety is paramount in ensuring the well-being of workers and the integrity of glass installations and workers, whether they have been in the job for one day or many decades, must remember that when it comes to glass, safety should always come first, and it starts with personal protective equipment (P.P.E.).

KUT GARD® ATA® PREVENTWEAR™

To help keep glass workers safe, PIP® (Protective Industrial Products) is proud to offer a full line of P.P.E. clothing designed to limit cuts, lacerations and other work-related injuries while simultaneously maintaining the integrity and clarity of the glass product! Specialized cut-resistant clothing such as Kut Gard® ATA® PreventWear™ cut-resistant clothing is a critical first line defense designed to help protect workers from lacerations and soft tissue puncture wounds caused from sharp or broken glass and industrial cutting tools. This type of injury can cause rapid blood loss resulting in death while cuts to a muscle, tendon, ligament, or nerve can cause shock or immobility.

APPAREL WITH HIGH-LEVEL CUT SAFETY ZONES PROTECT VITAL ARTERIES & VEINS

Unfortunately, glass incidents can be fatal if workers decide not to zipper their jacket or close the collar and a sharp edge or piece of glass cuts their neck. Glass-handling P.P.E. such as PreventWear™ is designed with anti-slash high collars (mock turtleneck), belly patches and tapered cut-resistant sleeves and feature ANSI safety rated multi-zonal protection on the chest, abdomen, arms, back (optional) and can be worn under clothing as a protective base layer or worn as part of a work uniform.

Treated with an antimicrobial solution to help prevent the growth of odor causing bacteria, Kut Gard® ATA® PreventWear™ is manufactured with 21 CFR-approved materials for food contact, making them a lightweight alternative to heavier garments worn in food processing.  For enhanced safety, Kut Gard® ATA® garments are available with optional high visibility accents that help raise worker awareness to help prevent accidents.

MEETS ASTM F2992-15 STANDARD

To ensure safety, the Kut Gard® ATA® PreventWear™ clothing series is tested to method ASTM F2992-15 standard. This test method assesses the cut resistance of a material when exposed to a cutting edge under specified loads with scores ranging from A1-A9.

Handling glass requires the utmost care and attention to ensure the safety of workers and the quality of the final glass product. It is crucial for companies, manufacturers, and the workers themselves to make safety a top priority when working with glass which includes wearing P.P.E. correctly. Regular safety training, adherence to guidelines and protocols, and an initiative-taking approach to identifying and mitigating risks also help prevent accidents and injuries.

If work includes bottling lines, glass handling, glass manufacturing, metal fabrication, food processing, law enforcement or security, recycling, sorting, sheet metal handling, automotive, steel banding, waste management then the body is at risk to serious cut hazards, but don’t fret it - prevention is only a click away.
