What's a Glovebox Glove?
A glovebox (or glove box) is a sealed container that is designed to allow one to manipulate objects where a separate atmosphere is desired. They are commonly used as a barrier to protect workers from hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, toxic gases or infectious disease agents from dermal absorption, inhalation or cross-contamination. Glovebox gloves will also protect against chemicals and materials that may be sensitive to air or water vapor.
What's a Glovebox?
Built into the sides of the glovebox are ports or openings where gloves are arranged in such a way that the user can slide their hands into the gloves and perform tasks inside the box without breaking containment. Part or all of the box is usually transparent to allow the user to see what is being manipulated.
The glove box is often utilized in biotechnology, biomedical, nuclear, military defense, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, chemical manufacturing, microbiological research, high-risk biological agents or to handle infectious pathogens.
Gloveboxes come in several configurations:
- Isolation chambers
- Single pass airflow filtered designs
- Contained loop systems
- Negative pressure systems
- Vacuum glove boxes
- Class III Biological Safety Cabinets
