The Advantages of Disposable Industrial Wipers

There have been a lot of discussions about the performance advantages and environmental impacts between laundered shop towels and disposable or limited-use wipers.

+Preserving Earth's Resources

From the environmental standpoints of energy and water consumption to waste produce, there are a number of advantages to using disposable wipers around the home or office.

From a life cycle standpoint, recycled wipers use less energy than laundered shop towels and contribute 30 percent less waste to landfill than rented shop towels.

Disposable wipers also use less water and generate less waste than laundered shop towels and since disposable wipers can be reused, it further increases water conservation and further reduces waste products.

+Landfill Space

The amount of landfill space occupied by industrial wipers is so miniscule that solid waste studies cannot identify a percentage number that wipers contribute to landfills. On the flip side, the daily commercial laundering  of uniforms, floor mats, towels, mops and more generate wastewater sludge such as sand, grit, oil, grease, heavy metals and volatile organic compounds (VOC's).  These concentrated contaminates are an environmental threat in landfills as it has the potential for leaking into groundwater.

Solvents are liquids or gases that can dissolve or extract other substances. They are used to dissolve grease, oil and paint; or to thin or mix pigments, paint, glue, pesticides, and epoxy resins. Used to clean electronics, automotive parts, tools, and engines, these saturated shop towels are also commercially laundered in solvents once again.

Air Quality

Laundered shop towels are collected and stored in one main holding area prior to mass washing. The evaporation of volatile solvents found on dirty wipers along with the solvents used to clean rental wipers can result in unhealthy air conditions or air pollution in and around the laundry facility.

Long-Term Exposure

Exposure to a massive amount of solvents can cause sudden death. Prolonged exposure to solvents can cause blindness, irregular heartbeat, and damage to the kidneys, liver, lungs, and central nervous system. Some solvents are listed as human carcinogens or "reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens" in the Thirteenth Report on Carcinogens published by the National Toxicology Program and can cause cancer. Regular exposure to solvents can cause memory and hearing loss, mental illness, depression, fatigue, confusion, dizziness, feeling drunk or "high," lack of coordination, headache, nausea, stomach pains, skin rashes, cracking or bleeding skin, and irritated eyes, nose, and throat. Exposure to solvent vapors can cause hoarseness, coughing, lung congestion, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
