Disposable Cover Gowns feature a one-piece solid frontal panel for full frontal coverage against particulate or liquid migration. Most wearers slide arms first into the garment sleeves, wrap the back panels and secure the gown with ties, Velcro or adhesive tab closures, but recently gowns that are pulled over-the-head are becoming common in emergency type situations.
OSHA requires the employer to evaluate the task and type of exposure anticipated and select the appropriate protective clothing that prevents contamination of an employee's skin or clothing by blood or other potentially infectious materials. Different applications require different levels of fabric protection but selecting the right material can be confusing. To eliminate confusion, here's a brief description of the most common materials used to produce protective isolation gowns.
Common Barrier Fabrics
Economical and comfortable, this standard fabric is a very popular choice for basic protective apparel requiring routine light spray and particulate protection. Protective barrier properties are formed by bonding fibers together to form a single layer of breathable, woven-like material. Spunbond polypropylene is economical, lightweight and comfortable. Commonly worn in dental, healthcare, medical research, pharmaceutical.
PE Coated Polypropylene
This fabric is a very popular choice for protective apparel requiring a high level of fluid and particulate protection. Protective barrier properties are formed by bonding fibers together to form a single layer of breathable, woven-like material with an outer layer of impervious polyethylene film. Commonly worn in high-level infectious diseases, pharmaceutical, undertaking/mortician, EMS.
SMS/Multi-Ply
This drapable fabric is appropriate for extended wear situations involving low to moderate fluid and particulate protection. Protective barrier properties consist of inner layers of meltblown polypropylene sandwiched between outer layers of spunbond polypropylene. Strong, fluid-resistant and breathable, this embossed multi-layer material provides an optimal mix of protection, aesthetics and comfort. Commonly worn in healthcare, research, clean rooms, dental.
This single layer of polyethylene film provides tremendous barrier properties. This material is ideal for situations when high levels of fluids are anticipated. Typically over-the-head gowns are made of this material. Commonly worn in EMS, emergency rooms/O.R., undertaking/mortician.
AAMI Compliant Isolation & Surgical Gowns
Because hospital infection rates are publicly published, much effort has been exerted to control and standardize products. Many hospitals are requiring isolation and surgical gowns meet AAMI guidelines- a widely accepted system of classification for protective apparel based on liquid barrier performance.
To meet AAMI Guidelines, protective apparel must achieve minimum performance standards for strength, barrier performance and fluid resistance. Tested under controlled conditions, AAMI-rated gowns must demonstrate a 4% AQL level, which provides a high level of assurance that users are protected for the anticipated level of fluid contact. Each garment must be fully protective in the front, back and along the seams, and be clearly labeled to indicate the level of protection provided, from AAMI Level 1 (lowest) to AAMI Level 4 (highest).
Because of the stringent testing, the cost of AAMI gowns are considerably more expensive. Non-AAMI compliant isolation gowns are worn in mass everyday to protect employees during routine tasks in dental, healthcare, research, pharmaceutical where classification is more relaxed.
