Essential Protective Gear for Essential Workers
Prevent Respiratory Disease with these American Made Filtering Facepiece Respirators
If you're an essential worker, social distancing and self-quarantine guidelines simply do not apply. During difficult times, brave front liner workers are at the forefront managing contagious viruses treating our friends, family and co-workers. True humanitarians, they deserve the very best protective gear available to protect them against infection because without them, our country would no doubt be in a much worse spot.
PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY
Vital Protective Gear Against the Spread
To resist contaminated aerosols and droplets from entering the respiratory system, filtering facepiece respirators (FFR's) provide the best barrier performance. They are commonly used to protect the respiratory system and faces of healthcare personnel (HCP) from very small airborne particles (0.3 microns) generated from speech, coughs or sneezes and from fluids such as sprays and splashes.
Not to be confused with loose fitting loop masks, respirators are a snug-fitting device worn over the nose and mouth to filter out at least 95% of particles in the air, including large and small particulates— the name refers to their minimum 95% efficiency at filtering contaminates.
Because they seal tightly around the nose and mouth few viral particles seep in or out. They also contain tangled fibers to filter airborne pathogens. A recent Duke study showed that less than 0.1% of droplets were transmitted through an N95 mask while the wearer was speaking. That's why FRR's are highly sought by and generally reserved for healthcare workers. Unfortunately the pandemic has created shortages of protective respiratory devices leading to counterfeit products, false claims, scams and censored search results by google.
A person in close contact with someone who is or may be infected needs two levels of protection that are largely independent. These are:
- Filtration: This aims to filter pathogens and other harmful substances. Filtering facepieces and surgical masks both have filter capabilities, but respirators filter much better than surgical masks. Respirators have one standard for filtration, while ear-loop style masks have three levels of filtration. The lowest standard is ASTM-Level 1.
- Fluid Barrier: Healthcare workers need to be protected from exposure to bodily fluids, aerosols and droplets from infected individuals as these could strike-through to the mouth or nose.
