Do you realize that the facial seal around the mouth and nose is the most critical factor to personal safety? When dealing with protective face masks or particulate respirators, scientific data will also show there are performance aspects that can mean the difference between staying healthy or becoming infected.  An important and obvious aspect to respiratory safety is filtration, but the single most important factor is ultimately the facial seal, thus the reason for different sizes.

Face masks and N95 respirator masks are worn to protect the lungs from the inhalation exposure of airborne particulates and biohazardous aerosols. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) states that tight-fitting respirators need a tight seal between the respirator and the face and/or neck of the respirator user for it to work properly, thus the reason for fit testing.

Filtration refers to the percentage of particles the mask material blocks. For example, a N95 respirator mask filters at least 95 percent of fine size airborne particles but this becomes meaningless if there are gaps around the mouth that lets air in freely.  Also, comfort is an important metric: a mask is no good if it isn’t being worn.

It is very important that a mask properly fits the wearers face. A properly fitted mask should rest snugly around the mouth and over the chin and nose. If the respirator's seal leaks or the mask sags along the sides, contaminated air will be pulled into the facepiece breathing zone and can be breathed in rendering the masks useless. Therefore, anything that interferes with the respirator seal is not permitted when using this type of respirator. This includes facial hair.
