Sterilization Products that Ensure Sterilize Performance

Sterile Processing is Instrumental to Infection Prevention and Patient Safety

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are infections that occur while receiving health care. Patients with medical devices (central lines, urinary catheters, ventilators) or undergo surgical procedures are at risk of acquiring HAIs.

To help fight HAIs, healthcare facilities such as hospitals or dental clinics perform sterilization on medical devices, instruments and equipment for reuse for future operations and other aseptic procedures.

Sterilization Packaging

One of the cheapest, easiest and most effective methods of destroying all living organisms on an item is steam sterilization, where instrumentation trays and packages are placed in a chamber filled with 250–270 °F (121–132 °C) of steam, killing all microorganisms.

While steam is a vital factor in the efficiency of the sterilization process, the packaging of the items is pivotal to achieve a cost-efficient autoclave cycle. This packaging has specific purposes such as:

  • to allow the removal of air and, therefore, the penetration and contact of the sterilizing agents with the surface of the object to be treated
  • to reduce the risk of contamination of the sterilized material when the sterile package is open
  • to preserve the sterility of the treated material until it is used
  • to be free of toxicity
  • to be practical, convenient and economical

Autoclave or steam sterilizers are a widely used machine used in microbiology and mycology, medicine and prosthetics fabrication, tattooing and body piercing, and funerary practice to sterilize equipment and other “dirty” objects. Designed to inactivate bacteria, fungi and spores, typical loads include:

  • Laboratory glassware
  • Instrumentation trays
  • Equipment and waste
  • Surgical instruments
  • Medical waste

Protect Items From Becoming Contaminated AFTER Sterilization

Sterile processing is instrumental to patient safety, infection prevention and contamination control. Professionals need solutions that allow for, verify and maintain the sterility of reusable medical devices until used. MDS Associates offers a portfolio of sterilization wrap and pouches to meet your sterilization packaging and assurance needs.
